In 2016, some technologies that were not considered feasible even a few years ago have become standard. Robotic vacuums are popping up in more homes every day, our smart phones have facial recognition, and it seems like everything is now bluetooth enabled.
So of course it makes sense that kitchens get a tech upgrade too. “Smarter” kitchens have been trending this year, with added electronics to make our lives more convenient. The kitchen has also become an extension of the living area in modern homes, with social gatherings and work often taking place there.
We are more connected with technology than we ever have been, so there are many ways to modernize the kitchen space to keep us plugged in.
Charging Stations
With the growing popularity of tablets, smartphones and laptops as part of our daily routine at home, charging stations are an attractive option for the kitchen counter. Installed in places that are easy to reach, these designated smart spaces are often found near seating areas or special cell phone cubbies. And since the island is now a more focal point in modern kitchens, special outlets in this area keep devices charged and ready to use whenever the need arises.
Charging stations are beginning to feature USB ports in addition to regular outlets for greater compatibility. To eliminate the hazard of exposed outlets in the kitchen, particularly when installed on the countertop, special concealed designs allow for the socket to be hidden when not in use. Some designs rise out like a column, while other power strips swivel around to cover the outlet.
Smart Appliances
Kitchen appliances are getting smarter as well. More kitchens are now being fitted with built in appliances that are essentially part of the cabinets. This includes built in refrigerators, ovens, and coffee makers. Integrated appliances mean less wasted space on the floor and counter and fewer electric cords visible (always a good thing).
And as appliance engineering becomes more sophisticated, the chef has better tools at his or her disposal. Many households now feature a steam oven in addition to a conventional oven. Steam ovens allow food to retain moisture better than a traditional oven, so the two are often seen side by side. And for anyone who’s tired of finding spoiled perishables in their refrigerator doors, German appliance maker Gaggenau has introduced a special refrigerated door that actually chills the door baskets to maintain the same temperature as the rest of the fridge.
The Future
As kitchen trends evolve to keep pace with our frantic digital landscape, we see more surprises emerge every year. Cabinet lighting, which only became popular recently, can now be remote controlled or activated by motion sensors. We can activate hard to reach cabinet doors electronically just by pushing a button. Some kitchens even have electronic slats that rise to reveal cupboards, such at the award-winning Xtend+ design by Leicht.
So can we finally invent a dishwasher that puts dishes away for us too?
